Aventura is a located in the northeastern Miami-Dade County of Florida. The city got its name from the Spanish word for "adventure," and was named "Aventura" because that was the name of the original group of condominium developments in the area. The name predates the well known Aventura Mall, a high end regional mall, which was built near the condominium developments.
The city was developed during the late 1970’s and before it was just a swampland known as "Biscayne Gardens".
The city also has its own exclusive park, which is called Founders Park, and an outdoor mall named the Shops at Waterways. The city has a community center for its residents and several parks including a free water park for kids and a doggy park. Oleta River State Park is also one of the busier parks there.
Although not inside the limits of the city, some of south Florida's finest beaches are just a few minutes away from Aventura, across the William H. Lehman Causeway. People will drive to the beach, but on hot, summer months, would prefer to enjoy their pool at their own home. In addition, Aventura is the home of International Jewelers Exchange which has made Aventura its home for over 26 years. It features over 50 individual high end jewelry stores in one location just a few blocks south of the Aventura Mall.
Aventura is only minutes from Hollywood and Miami. Aventura is a great city with excellent schools. Aventura is about 30 minutes away from Ft. Lauderdale & Miami airports as well as South Beach. Sunny Isles Beach is about 2 miles. Sawgrass Mills, one of the largest outlet malls is about a 30-minute drive.
The traffic in the city can be overwhelming especially on weekdays, but is a nice city to live in. The traffic from Miami Gardens to Biscayne Boulevard is mostly where a lot of the traffic congestion takes place.
The Aventura City of Excellence School is the only public school located within the City of Aventura. It is a charter school sponsored by the city and has become an award winning school even though it was only built and opened in 2003. The school was ranked in the top 10 of all schools in Florida in the year 2006.
