Often called, "The Gables or The City Beautiful", Coral Gables sits as a rare gem in Miami-Dade County of Florida, which is Southwest of Miami, Florida. The city is considered home to the University of Miami, a recognized university that ranks academically among the top tier of U.S.-based colleges and universities. Coral Gables is one of the first planned communities equipped with its gated community and homeowners association regulations.
The city was developed by George Merrick in the 1920’s and has become a commerical district about two miles long and four blocks wide. The city has a sizable business district. The area is serviced by a free trolley system that runs throughout the day. Due to the trolley system, Coral Gables is known as a pedestrian friendly environment. Every business is less than two blocks worth of walking.
The historic Merrick house, the boyhood home of Coral Gables founder, George Merrick, is an open attraction to the public on Wednesdays and Sundays for guided tours.
Coral Gables residents include middle to upper class people. The city is well known for its restaurants, art galleries, unique shops and boutiques and live theater performances. Coral Gables schools are part of the Miami-Dade School District, which serves almost all of Miami’s metropolitan area. The district has one high school in Coral Gables, Coral Gables High School, which educates students from grades nine through twelve.
The City Beautiful is only four miles away from the Miami International Airport. In addition, the city boasts more than 140 dining establishments and gourmet shops, plus many notable international retailers. Coral Gables has a coverage of several local and regional radio and television stations. Coral Gables is also covered by several weekly newspapers, but has only two newspapers with the city's namesake and main focus. The Coral Gables Gazette is the only award winning FPA (Florida Press Association) weekly newspaper serving Coral Gables.
The Venetian Pool is a public pool located in Coral Gables, Florida. It was created from an old coral rock quarry abandoned in 1921 on four acres.
